With the recent layoffs in the tech sector, many are finding themselves without jobs. Getting laid off is an upsetting experience. Here’s what to do if you find yourself getting the pink slip.

Take care of yourself

I’m a huge believer that you have to take special care when dealing with any kind of loss, especially a job. Take the time to process your emotions. You may feel sad, angry, sometimes elated, or even all three. Go through the emotions so you can come out on the other side with a clearer head and onward toward your next steps.

Take a look at your finances

Take out a pencil or an Excel worksheet and create a rundown of your budget and expenses. Figure out how much you need to make a month or how long you can go without a job. This will inform your next steps.

List all your skills

When you find yourself jobless, it’s easy to believe that you have no worth. The truth is, we all have more skills than we realize. Grab a pen and jot down everything you’re good at. Make sure to include hard skills as well as soft skills like conflict resolution, team development, and communication.
